This impressive 13er straddles the border of Yosemite National Park to the west and Inyo National Forest to the east at a height of 13057 ft above sea level.

You can begin the hike right by the entrance of Tioga Pass in Yosemite National Park. Upon entering, there is a parking lot on the right side. If this parking area is full, you can also park just outside the entrance, although it is smaller but still convenient access to the trailhead. Restrooms are located right next to the parking lot, in case there is need to make a stop.

Whether you are seeking a day adventure or preparing for challenging mountain climbs, this hike is ideal to prepare for both. Tribe has arranged this hike multiple times, with each experience offering a unique twist. Typically for pre-hike accommodation, you can choose to stay at the Lake View Lodge or Tioga Lodge in Lee Vinning, CA, just a quick 20-minute drive from the trailhead. Both lodges provide comfortable options for the stay. In case you are looking to camp, then any of the campground close to the trailhead will be ideal for a early start.

Start time for the hike for the tribe was 5:00 AM, it was still a bit dark and headlamps came in handy. At the onset the trail starts of nice and flat for about half a mile. Once you are past the lakes on the left the climb begins and stays relentless all the way to the summit, it is good to mentally prepare for the uphill.

Ascend slowly, hydrate well, watch the changes in weather and always be reminded of the powers of mother nature

Initially, the trail is bordered by wildflowers and some trees. However, after less than a mile, the trail becomes exposed and remains so. While the path is consistently rocky, it is well-marked and easy to follow for the most part. Although there are areas that may seem like a field of boulders, large cairns indicate the correct navigation direction. Between the trailhead and the steep ascent of over 1000 feet in 3/4 mile to the summit, hikers can enjoy a pleasant respite walking along the ridge on the left with a view of Mount Dana straight ahead. Also this is a spot to fuel up for the final uphill portion for the day. Tribe did just that!

The Yosemite backcountry offers breathtaking views during the uphill hike, providing plenty of opportunities to take breaks and enjoy the scenery. However, reaching the summit will leave you in awe, with the sensation of being at the highest point and having a panoramic view of the entire Sierra Nevada range ahead, making the challenging ascent truly rewarding. Although experiencing Mono Lake up close is enjoyable, the aerial perspective from the top of Mt. Dana will reveal the expansiveness and magnificence of this natural marvel.

It was a windy day at Mount Dana, Tribe sought shelter in a small bunker at the summit to escape the strong winds. We treated ourselves to a snack and sandwich while enjoying the beautiful views. Tribe's most loved hike offers incredibly stunning views you could ever wish for.

Lessons from the tribe - Mount Dana, similar to many high altitude mountains, possesses its unique mood. It can get windy, cold, with hail sometimes or can be scorching heat with no tree cover - Tribe has seen it all on this one. It is essential to always carry layers that help shield from the varying natural elements when venturing outdoors.
